What is the difference between a gold vermeil and solid gold luggage tag?

Our Solid Gold charms are made of 14K solid gold. 14K solid gold refers to an alloy that contains 58.3% pure gold and 41.7% other metals, such as copper, silver, nickel, or zinc. Here are some key points about 14K solid gold:

  1. Purity: 14K gold is 14 parts gold out of 24, meaning it is 58.3% pure gold. The remaining 41.7% consists of other metals that are added to enhance the durability and hardness of the gold.
  2. Durability: Because it contains a significant percentage of other metals, 14K gold is harder and more durable than higher-karat gold. This makes it a popular choice for jewelry that is worn daily, such as engagement rings, wedding bands, and bracelets.

Gold vermeil (pronounced "ver-may") is a type of high-quality gold plating over a base of sterling silver. To qualify as vermeil, the gold layer must be at least 2.5 microns thick and typically uses 14k or higher gold. This creates a luxurious appearance similar to solid gold at a more affordable price.

Important Qualities:

  1. Durability: The thick gold layer over sterling silver provides a durable and long-lasting finish, more resilient than standard gold plating.
  2. Affordability: It offers the look and feel of solid gold at a lower cost, making it accessible for those seeking luxurious jewelry without the high price.
What is IATA?

Each airport has an IATA airport code. These codes are three-letter designations assigned by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to uniquely identify airports around the world. For example, JFK stands for John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, LAX for Los Angeles International Airport, and HND for Tokyo Haneda Airport. These codes are used in airline timetables, tickets, baggage tags, and other travel documents to streamline and standardize travel logistics. Fun fact: this organization was established in 1945 to support and promote the airline industry.

What is the backstory of luggage tags? When were they first used?

Early Days: The Birth of the Luggage Tag

The concept of the luggage tag dates back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, coinciding with the rise of railway and steamship travel. During this era, travelers began to embark on longer journeys, often involving multiple transfers between different modes of transport. To ensure their belongings arrived at the correct destination, passengers would attach handwritten or printed tags to their luggage. These early tags were often made of paper or cardboard and featured the passenger's name, destination, and sometimes the name of the transport company.

The Golden Age of Travel: Elegance and Exclusivity

As travel became more accessible and luxurious in the early to mid-20th century, luggage tags evolved into symbols of sophistication and status. The advent of commercial aviation in the 1920s and 1930s brought about a new wave of travel enthusiasts. Airlines and cruise lines began issuing personalized luggage tags to their passengers, often adorned with the company’s logo and stylish designs. These tags were crafted from durable materials like leather and metal, reflecting the elegance of the golden age of travel.
